Canada’s Digital Supercluster, an industry led-consortium intended for economic growth and jobs creation, announced a $725,000 investment last week in the CFNC Network to catalyze education and learning. “The digital divide locked us out.”īut improvements are underway. have faced connectivity challenges for many years, however these challenges became most apparent when the COVID pandemic began and forced everything online,” says Paige Richardson, community connectivity coordinator at the Coastal First Nations Connectivity (CFNC) Network. “First Nations communities in coastal B.C. that do not have access to broadband are primarily on the outskirts of connected communities or in remote areas where populations are small or dispersed, making internet connectivity cost-prohibitive and challenging. While Canada has made significant progress on its goal of providing all households with access to broadband speeds of 50 Mbps (download) and 10 Mbps (upload) by 2030 (a level of service nearly every urban household has), 65 per cent of households on First Nations reserves and almost every household in the territories are still without access. The problem is especially pressing in First Nation communities. and elsewhere, access to essential connectivity has always been a major issue. But for many residents in remote areas in B.C.
